Douglas McGilvray

Multi-disciplinarian, wayward son, diligent trouble-maker.
Biography

Douglas has worked in such diverse roles as university lecturer, navigating punts on the river Cam, and many things in-between. He channels these experiences into his creative problem solving and for any given challenge Douglas has several solutions; and usually at least one of them is good.

Determined to disprove his career counselor by demonstrating that Music and Physics are in fact a viable combination, Douglas embarked, unbeknownst to him, on a path towards academia. He landed in an emerging field of study which some people were calling Music Information Retrieval. Blessed with the opportunity to work with some engineers & musicians of world renown, together they founded N-ISM (Network for Interdisciplinary Studies in Science & Music) and developed new computational tools to analyse music, performance & expression. After some years researching a PhD, teaching, and researching in University of Glasgow & Glasgow Caledonian University, wanderlust compelled him to take a sabbatical in South America which would soon become a brand new life in Argentina.

Having worked in a couple of web startups he realised that digital design & web development shares the cross-discipline nature of his academic work: a combination of creativity, engineering and humanistic elements. “There is something extremely satisfying about bridging disciplines - finding correlations in apparently unrelated fields and elegant solutions that satisfy diverse domains."

When Douglas & Square360 found each other it was probably a given that it would become a (second) second home for him. A team with the skills, vision, and drive to innovate and who apparently share or at least tolerate his sense of humour. Behind his childish and irreverent jokes however, he hides a passion for experimentation, a rigor for continual improvement, and a love for life & adventure.
